Experienced Birth Doula
My mother’s career in birth photography exposed me to the glorious mysteries of pregnancy, birth, and babies from an early age. I was fascinated with this time of life and became a doula starting in 2012, largely as a volunteer with at-risk families in Southern Oregon. I attended 100+ births from home to hospital, and was employed at the Ashland Birth Center.
Though I felt natural as a doula and reverent of birth, I realized that, while birth is transformative, it is a singular experience… and parenting is forever. To help parents develop tools to reduce stress and bond with their babies, I learned to teach the Calm Birth prenatal meditation method in 2012, and Parent-Infant Massage in 2013.
In 2016, I moved to Seattle to work in infant research at UW’s Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences (I-LABS), and took a sabbatical from birth. I earned Master’s degrees in Social Work and Public Health from UW, graduating in 2020. Grad school taught me multitudes about myself, the medical system, intersecting forms of injustice… but my heart ached for the unparalleled connection and primality of birth. Shortly after graduating, I decided to do what makes my heart sing and rekindled my doula work, which felt like coming home. I re-certified as a doula, this time through Birth Advocacy Doula Training, and became a childbirth educator through the same program.
I see pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum period as determinants of health for the entire family and I’m passionate about bringing anti-racism and equity into modern childbirth. I am presently a student midwife through Bastyr University, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to learn everything I can about the miraculous abilities of the human body and heart. When a family asks me to be their doula, I consider it the highest honor.
In my free time, I love a long bike ride, taking the streets for climate justice, hikes with my dog and husband, reading voraciously, and tending my fledgling garden… and learning anything and everything about pregnancy, birth, lactation, and beyond!
